Discussion on Communication-constrained Inference
Recently, I have been working with Amy Braverman and Li-Hsiang Lin on communication-constrained statistical inference. The general question is this: when observations are distributed across multiple instruments, sensors, or sites, and the raw data cannot all reach a central processor before a scientific deadline, what information should each site transmit? We want to understand when low-dimensional summaries can reproduce centralized inference exactly, when iterative communication is needed, and when inference necessarily deteriorates as bandwidth or latency becomes more restrictive.
Astronomy may have exactly this type of problem. One example I found is rapid localization and characterization of a high-energy transient using a network or constellation of photon-counting detectors. Each detector observes part of the event, while communication may limit how much timing and energy information can be combined before an important follow-up deadline.
