PixInsight Workshop 2014

28 - 29 June 2014

Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA

The PixInsight Workshop will give amateur and professional astrophotographers alike a chance to work with Vicent Peris, a member of the PixInsight team, exploring the many advanced image processing techniques available in the PixInsight platform.

The PixInsight Workshop will be held at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in Cambridge, MA (USA). The CfA is a collaboration of the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (SAO) and the Harvard College Observatory (HCO). View Smithsonian's Privacy Notice & Terms of Use.

PixInsight is an advanced, modular image processing software platform designed specifically for the demanding requirements of astrophotography and other technical imaging fields.

PixInsight is produced by Pleiades Astrophoto, a Spanish software development company boasting an international research and development team with expertise in astronomy, photography, mathematics and software engineering. PixInsight brings a huge wealth of image processing power to the amateur or professional astrophotographer.

Workshop Highlights

This is an attendee customized workshop that will focus on teaching the logical thinking inside each image processing case. Each registered participant will be provided with a personal FTP account on the PixInsight file server, where he/she will be able to upload raw data that will be worked out during the workshop. In this way the participants will have the opportunity to apply and understand the concepts and techniques described in the context of their particular imaging conditions.

The participants will be able to upload their data until May 28th. Participants should accept the use of their data exclusively in the workshop by the other attendees. Selection of the most appropriate data sets for the workshop is up to the teacher.

Each attendee should bring his/her laptop. In order to practice with the group, you'll need an active trial or commercial PixInsight license. In case of having a trial license, a local WiFi internet access will be available in the workshop room. The workshop will cover these topics (workshop program could be modified by the author depending on the uploaded data):

  1. Learning to navigate the PixInisght environment
  2. Elemental techniques of astronomical image processing
  3. Image delinearization, dynamic range compression and masking techniques
  4. Narrowband techniques.
