It's probably worth mentioning that Herman Chernoff is a giant of 20th century statististics and his faces are well-known but certainly not his most important work. He made seminal contributions to sequential experimental design and decision theory. Of tangential interest to astronomers: Cornell astronomer David Chernoff, who works in many fields including astrostatistics, is Herman Chernoff's nephew! Chernoff faces are fun.
