AXAF HXDS Calibration at PTB-BESSY Page
Calibration Test Run #2

Test Plan Outline.  The attached test plan outline is presented here as an overview of what we plan to accomplish.

Shipment to Berlin

The Porter Exchange x-ray detector test chamber was removed from the Porter facility, modified, and assembled for use in Berlin.  Modifications include the incorporation of a hinged assembly for its access door so that will not need a hoist for access to the chambers inside.  A support stand was made for the detector chamber which will allow it to be rolled to each of the beamlines and then raised or lowered to the appropriate height.

The chamber is shown being packed and prepared for shipment to Berlin:

Week I.

Test Setup

The equipment arrived at the BESSY facility on Friday, November 28, 1997 at 6:30pm. PTB personnel were there to accept the shipment, SAO personnel were on their flights from Boston to Berlin. All of the equipment arrived except for the UPS (uninterruptable power supply) for the vacuum pump system, but was expected to arrive by the end of Tuesday, the following week.  Setup for testing was completed on Wednesday, December 4, 1997.

Test

After beginning test on third shift, Wednesday, December 04, 1997, we ran 24 hour testing to finish up the first test week using fpc_x2 and fpc_hn on the SAO Pipe chamber to conduct tests on QE mapping, spectral response functions, gas opacity, counting rate linearity, and anode wire aging and gain uniformity. All tests, and some extras, were completed Sunday around 11 a.m. local time. Data and log files were ftp'd to /data/axaff/bradw/bessy.

Week II.

We removed our chamber from the SX700 beamline.  It was replaced by the PTB reflectometer in order to perform transmission measurements on several filters, FPC windows, and the HSI uv/ion shield, as well as measure the
sizes of several small FPC apertures.  Testing should began Monday, December 8, 1997 (one day ahead of schedule).  This allowed us to finish testing by Thursday evening--PTB has requested that we not test on Friday if possible (although we
could if necessary), so that they could begin work on a complicated setup for the next user.

Mike McDermott arrived Sunday, and Robert Austin stayed on for several days.

What we do when we aren't working ... it's amazing what you can do when you haven't got much time to do it in .....
